Signs You Need A Home Rewiring

Getting the home electrical wiring system in order may not be at the top of your home improvement job list, but it should be. It's, after all, home safety that's being discussed. A home rewiring can be an overwhelming job if you aren't aware of where to start and what exactly home rewiring entails. 

Luckily, you can leave the rewiring job to a professional electrician. But before you get to hire one, how can you tell that your home needs rewiring? Well, here are a few tell-tale signs you should know.

Flickering Lights

If your wiring has been done correctly, there should be no blinking lights. But if you notice flickering lights, it's a sign of home electrical problems and that the home needs rewiring. In some cases, the problem can be with the bulbs: they're probably not well connected or need changing. Ensure you rule out such problems before concluding that it's a wiring problem. 

If you change the bulbs, but the problem keeps happening in more than one room, call an electrician to check it out.

Outdated Wiring

If the wiring was done a long time ago, the chances are high that other devices in the home require different amperage. So, when you hire an electrician to check on the home wiring, ensure they look for all sources of power and identify if any home rewiring needs to be carried out.

Most homes that were built in the mid-1960s use aluminum wiring. Unfortunately, aluminum wiring isn't sustainable and increases the risk of electrical fires. If your house has this type of electrical wiring, you need to schedule a complete home rewiring. 

Electric Shocks

Electric shocks can also signal home rewiring problems. If you have been in your home for some time and haven't experienced anything like this, it doesn't mean that home electrical wiring is perfect. It will take some time before the problem becomes apparent to you. But if you find yourself getting electric shocks when running cords near or against a baseboard, then home rewiring isn't off the table.

Faulty Switches

Another home electrical wiring problem can be faulty switches. If you notice that some of your home switches are malfunctioning or go on and off by themselves, it means that home rewiring may have to be carried out. However, your electrician will have to look at the home's circuit breaker panel to confirm home rewiring is necessary.
